history - Before CLI, what interface was used to program computers? -

as have been working through cli on raspberry pi, have begun wonder used before cli. how computers programmed without rudimentary interface? , how did go ancient interface cli, , gui?

before cli: patch cords. front panel lights , switches. punched cards. punched 35mm film. punched sheet paper. paper tape. magnetic pencil dots on paper. analog knobs , dials. initial gear positions. , that's partial list.
