if notice sidebar left default. selecting "about" link activates right content area , sidebar slide right.

i'm not sure understand correctly. if want have sidebar on left in homepage, , on right on other pages, create 2 modules sidebar;

  • the first must assigned left sidebar position (find out name in template) , published on selected pages (and choose homepage in list).

  • the second must assigned right sidebar position , published "except on these pages" (choosing same pages above)

this way joomla know 1 show.

if mean should smoothly "slide" right while content loaded, that's different ballpark , besides animation you'll need ajax loading of content.
