java - Should I use a framework? -

i know question vague, i'll try make myself clear.

i starting java project involving swing gui. want follow mvc pattern, , use framework organize project's architecture. thinking of using griffon, though suppose others might trick.

so, idea use framework in terms of:

  • programming efficiency: of course, improved... most of time. more precisely, if project small one? or large one? if i'm familiar java , swing? if i'm not? if project has maintained knows nothing framework used?

  • learning value: merely "learn how use framework", instead of learning more java , swing in different environment?

  • professional value: companies prefer developer knows "more" frameworks (even if might not ones intend use) developer knows "traditional" approach better?

i found little information elsewhere, surprising, considering how big question is. might seem trivial, i'm wondering it.

i evaluating griffon framework. got impression project dieing. imho groovy not mainstream anymore (i wonder if ever mainstream?). fancies scala.

now question:

  • most frameworks expect follow standard development path. changes / customizations introduce difficult maintain solutions (they call architecture afterwards). choose framework allows 95% of things plan do. , yeah, choose mainstream framework.
  • griffon based on groovy, have master groovy first. ok, groovy jvm language , if you're ok java help, still dsls require time settle in head.
  • if know mainstream framework - valuable asset. sad fact frameworks tend fade / die , have new buzz things. never stop learning (although key principles cannot changed , remain constant framework framework)
